Multi-spectral Imagery of the Volga River Delta

August 11, 2017
Image of the Volga River

The Volga River, Europe's longest and largest river by volume, flows from northwest Russia into the Caspian Sea. The delta created by the river's discharge is seen here in this multi-spectral imagery from the Suomi NPP satellite's VIIRS sensor. The image, captured on August 6, 2017, uses the high resolution thermal imagery bands (SVI 3, 2, 4), along with color enhancements. This combination of bands creates a blue hue for the saturated lands associated with the river and coastline.
