GOES-16 captured this geocolor image of Hurricane Irma -- a category 5 storm with winds as high as 185 miles per hour -- today at about 3:15 pm (eastern), September 6, 2017. According to the latest information from NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (issued at 2:00 pm EDT on 9/6), Irma is forecast to remain a powerful category 4 or 5 hurricane during the next couple of days. An unofficial observation on Buck Island in the U.S. Virgin Islands has recently reported sustained winds of 106 mph with a gust to 131 mph.
