The center of Hurricane Maria approaches the northern coast of Puerto Rico in this geocolor image captured by NOAA's GOES-16 on September 20, 2017.Maria is about 15 miles east-southeast of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and has maximum sustained winds of about 140 miles per hour with higher gusts, according to the latest advisory from NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (11:00 am, EDT). The center of Maria is expected to move offshore of the northern coast of Puerto Rico during the next couple of hours, pass offshore of the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic tonight and Thursday (9/21), and then move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas Thursday night and Friday (9/22).
