Arctic Sea Ice Study Suggests Accelerated Melting

March 5, 2020
Animation shows the change in sea ice in the Arctic from April to Sept. 2019

This animation shows the maximum-to-minimum melt cycle of Arctic sea ice for a single warm season, April to September 2019. Measurements last year revealed the second lowest extent of Arctic sea ice on record, and scientists expect the melting to accelerate.

A new paper from NOAA and partners suggests the Arctic may be nearly ice-free by the 2030s.However, there’s a caveat. The results indicate that there is room for improvement in sea-ice models.
